Bathroom cleaning tips

It’s safe to say that cleaning  the bathroom isn’t the most glamorous way to spend your time. Nevertheless, it’s a job that has to be done. Once your bathroom is sparkling, everything will feel much lighter.

Find a Motivator. Use motivators to prevent distraction and head off boredom. You can play your favorite upbeat music, listen to a book on tape so you'll feel as if you're accomplishing two tasks at once.

Take your time. Place granulated or liquid toilet bowl cleaner into the bowl, and let the cleaner go to work. Standing time is necessary to dissolve deposits and kill germs, so don't cut the time short.

Get rid of mold stains with baking soda. For those stubborn mold and mildew stains that your dish brush and bleach solution won't touch, try applying a paste of baking soda and water.

Dress for Success. Professional cleaners dress in comfortable, washable clothing designed for work. Supportive shoes and kneepads spare their bodies. Goggles and gloves protect against chemicals.

Mouthwash. Grab a bottle of mouthwash from the medicine cabinet and pour ¼ cup into the bowl. After about half an hour, scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and flush.

Keep showerheads unclogged.

  • If you can remove the showerhead, dissolve four to five denture tablets in a bowl of water and put the head in to soak. Or let it soak overnight in white vinegar.
  • If the showerhead isn’t removable, pour the denture tablet solution or vinegar into a plastic bag, tape or tie the bag to the fixture so the showerhead is completely immersed and leave the bag in place for one to two hours. To make sure the showerhead is completely unblocked, clean out the holes with a needle, piece of wire or toothpick. Then wipe the head with a cloth dipped in vinegar.

Keep your mirror streak-free. Wipe away splatters of sun cream, toothpaste, moisturiser, etc., from your mirror with a little rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth. Then, use glass cleaner or plain water on a fine microfibre cloth, working from edge to edge and then top to bottom.

Run regular spot-checks. Keep a microfibre cloth handy in the bathroom at all times to quickly rub off toothpaste splatters, watermarks and other stains before they dry and become harder to remove. You only need to add water, so no chemicals are required.
